The Discovery Center of Idaho was originally a Junior R.O.T.C. military building - a 23,600 sq. ft. metal shed organized into four parallel wings. The remodel was completed in two phases;
Phase 1 included a 5,396 sq. ft. remodel of wing 1 into a wood shop, exhibit assembly area, exhibit space, a tour room with built-in bleacher seating, storage areas and a fire exit.
Phase 2 involved a 1,700 sq. ft. lobby addition to the east elevation. The triple height space of the atrium lobby creates a grand entry. The lobby addition incorporated two ramped & screened wing entrances to the lobby, a gift shop, storage and a recognition hall with a pendulum pit. The building was re-roofed and a painted stucco finish was added to the new addition as well as to sections of the building.
Petersen • Staggs Architects LLP also designed an enclosed exhibit patio featuring exhibit displays amidst landscaping and an auditorium, although they were never constructed.
During design of the Discovery Center of Idaho, Petersen • Staggs Architects LLP provided entitlement, planning and code analysis, site development, building design, engineering systems coordination, phasing, construction documents, specifications and construction administration services.
