Albertson’s Inc. Marketplace, Boise, Idaho
Albertson’s Marketplace, located on the site of the company’s first store in the historic North End of Boise, entailed special visual mitigation design features to ensure the integrity of the neighborhood as well as projecting the desired corporate image. The development is sited on two separate blocks. A relationship of the “whole” is maintained through architectural style and site characteristics while allowing traffic to flow through the market place. The 40,000 sq. ft. retail center was designed to be linked by pedestrian circulation corridors and by two broad cross campus axis, which radiate from the hub.
The three-building retail center was designed so the back of the buildings would carry around the design theme of the project, encouraging neighborhood continuity and further mitigating visual impact. Wide aprons with mounding and generous landscaping further enhance this development. Careful design consideration was given to covered pedestrian walkways enhancing movement among retail shops throughout the center especially during inclement weather. Key elements in the master plan and building design included circulations, service entrances, weather, versatility and flexible uses, corporate identity, multiple accesses, high volume traffic and a heavy mix of people and automobiles in a neighborhood setting.
Petersen • Staggs Architects LLP provided the master planning, architectural design and construction management services related to the development of the market place. Albertson’s Marketplace was honored with an award for excellence in architectural and landscape architectural design by the City of Boise.
